Martha Ferris: 50th Anniversary Gallery #7

Image
Chicken on a Bicycle by Martha Ferris 12" x 12" acrylic on board $650 This chicken is a Columbian Wyandotte named Pessoa after the great Portuguese writer. She is one of a flock of six beautiful hens lovingly tended by two wonderful writers who happen to live with my husband, another wonderful writer, and me. Thus her literary name. We are never short of eggs, thanks to these lovely ladies, or of words, thanks to my housemates. Pessoa, or Pessy as we now call her, is a prolific layer. She is also a loner who lets you pick her up for caresses and prefers this bicycle to any other perch outside her coop. - Martha Ferris     Chicken on the Glove 12" x 12" acrylic on board $650 Chicken on the Wing 12" x 12" acrylic on board $650 I can’t remember when I first met Lesley.  It feels like I’ve always known her, and I have always found my way home to her Attic Gallery.  She’s the art maven of Warren County, welcoming, nurturing, and inspiring all artists and...

Kreg Yingst - 50th Anniversary Gallery #6

Image
Little Brother Montgomery - by Kreg Yingst 2 color block print 10” x 10” $195 This piece was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Attic Gallery on Washington Street in Vicksburg, Mississippi.   In 1930, just a year after the great stock market crash, one of my favorite artist’s Lynd Ward released his second woodcut novel, Madman’s Drum, while barrelhouse blues pianist Little Brother Montgomery released his signature song, Vicksburg Blues. An influence on Willie Dixon, Otis Span, and Skip James, Montgomery would play in nightspots in Vicksburg and Gulfport, Mississippi, as well as New Orleans. Montgomery led his own Jackson-based Southland Troubadors, sometimes broadcasting on local stations such as WCOC in Meridian, to advertise the band's appearances. The group, which also toured several states billed as the Collegiate Ramblers, never recorded, but as a solo pianist or with only one accompanist, Montgomery cut twenty-two blues sides, all released on singles on ...

Ron Lindsey: 50th Anniversary Gallery #5

Image
Paul's Pitcher and Seashell by Ron Lindsey Acrylic on board 18" x 20" $645   This painting is acrylic and modeling paste on board. Paul Fayard gave me the small turquoise pitcher and LaRita Smith gave me the seashell. The almost petrified wild orange is from my tree. I had the Italian artist Morandi in mind as I painted this one.   Lesley remembers: With many of our artists comes a new story and a new learning about art for me. My perceptions exploded when I got to know Ron because of his approach to art and his vision. His paintings of Vicksburg houses and scenes and his still lifes turned the subjects into textures, into shapes and into colors. When I would look into his work, the surface would reveal layer after layer. Where you might expect one color, there were many, all with something to say. Ron also contributed to my art education by sharing some of his influences with me, including Wayne Thiebaud, Richard Diebenkorn, and Rufino Tamayo. I always enjoyed ...

Jean Blue: 50th Anniversary Gallery #4

Image
Click to see it bigger...   A View from the Top - by Jean Blue Acrylic on canvas 16” x 16” $645   I have found inspiration time and again from the diverse architecture of Vicksburg structures. In an effort to present the magnificent Italianate Baer House on South Street in a different way, I chose to focus on its gables. I have taken a number of photos of the house through the years, but I had never noticed what looks like a bird perched on the roof in one of the images. It seemed fitting to include one and to title the painting “A View from the Top.”    Lesley remembers: Jean’s work reaches out and grabs my soul. And it’s not just me. So often I am asked, “do you  have any of Jean Blue’s available?” They stand in line whenever there is new work. It appeals to so many, and it has been my privilege to witness their reactions. Her combination of subject, color, texture all come together. She is fearless and successful with each new experiment. A magical en...
