Chicken on a Bicycle by Martha Ferris

This chicken is a Columbian Wyandotte named Pessoa after the great Portuguese writer. She is one of a flock of six beautiful hens lovingly tended by two wonderful writers who happen to live with my husband, another wonderful writer, and me. Thus her literary name. We are never short of eggs, thanks to these lovely ladies, or of words, thanks to my housemates. Pessoa, or Pessy as we now call her, is a prolific layer. She is also a loner who lets you pick her up for caresses and prefers this bicycle to any other perch outside her coop. - Martha Ferris

I can’t remember when I first met Lesley.  It feels like I’ve always known her, and I have always found my way home to her Attic Gallery.  She’s the art maven of Warren County, welcoming, nurturing, and inspiring all artists and art lovers who know her.  And to know Lesley is to love her.  She has created a haven in the Attic that draws people of every stripe from every walk of life, and each visitor is invited to touch and admire and wonder at the displays on her gallery walls.  Her annual theme shows are famous for somehow reflecting the tenor of the moment every time.  She harnessed the responses of a lot of us in a most hopeful and helpful way early in the pandemic, inviting us to participate in the Attic’s first online exhibit, Reaching Out.   I remember a show in the 90’s  that featured works by Mothers and Daughters.  My sister-in-law Jann Ferris showed her work with her daughter Shelby who was in an institution at the time being treated for an eating disorder.  Shelby’s paintings and collages sold out, and Jann was ecstatic.  Years later when Jann had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and was obsessively drawing magical, enchantingly costumed figures in pen and ink, Lesley offered her a show.  The show sold out before it even opened, and it was a glorious moment of community affirmation for Jann, a gifted artist and inspiring art educator.  Lesley has a knack for making mitzvahs happen and deflecting her much deserved credit.  She is a gift to us all, and the Attic is a Mecca for everyone who loves art. - Martha Ferris

Lesley says: I first met Martha years ago as one of a very creative Vicksburg family, and it has been a privilege to watch her grow and develop as an artist over the years: doing both very personal work, and creating large public art installations. Hearing her voice and being in her presence, and allowing her generous spirit to wash over us make being with Martha and her husband, Kos, a joy.

Bio: Martha Ferris

Working in a variety of media, Martha Ferris creates richly detailed and highly evocative landscapes that move beyond conventional or literal interpretations to reveal the abstract nature of the visible world. Her work is recognizable without being traditional – all of us have walked along her roads and through her woods - and she fills her paintings with warm and brilliant colors that are both realistic and surprising.
